my top 5 books for the mama’s soul

I love, love, LOVE to read. I have an out of control obsession with books and literally have books in every part of my house. Luckily, we finally moved into a bigger home and I have a space for all my books. I’m sure my husband is thrilled.

My favorite books pretty much consist of tons of thriller and Christian reads. I think I should actually start venturing out into something other than thrillers but to be honest, I highly dislike any romance novels. I’ll maybe do historical fiction but I always end up back at thrillers.

But lately I have been doing a lot of reading for the soul + spirit. I love pretty much all of Lysa TerKeurst books and recommend them left and right. I’m very picky when it comes to my books and she has not disappointed me in her writing and her ability to reach out through the pages and get you. Through her I have discovered many more Christian authors whom I have come to love.

Before I continue to ramble on forever, let’s get to my top 5!

1. Uninvited – Lysa TerKeurst

  • This book is about rejection and how the enemy constantly wants us to feel rejected, left out, lonely, etc. It speaks to many different areas in our lives where we might feel less than. It covers many different topics as well as offer encouragement and bible references that can help us overcome rejection. I have read this book probably about 5 times and each time I feel every single word reaching out to me.

2. Wait and See – Wendy Pope

  • Sometimes waiting on God can seem like forever. We wait for answers, we wait for guidance, we wait to get out of hard times, we wait for people – we wait and then we wait some more. After months or even years of constant wait, we might begin to doubt His promises. In this book, Wendy Pope tells us to focus on God rather than the object of our wait. As she shares the story of King David, she encourages us to grow closer to God in our wait. This book is fantastic and had me in tears. We’ve all been through rough times, experienced loss, pain and loneliness – and it seems like it will never end. We find ourselves asking God, why me? This book is filled with biblical truths to defeat our doubts.

3. It’s Not Supposed To Be This Way – Lysa TerKeurst

  • In this book Lysa TerKeurst shares her personal story of how her life did not turn out as expected. Much alike our own personal struggles, she shares her own personal stories and how she overcame disappointments and hurtful circumstances through faith in God. Shortly after she wrote Uninvited, she went through a life shattering experience. Sometimes we wonder – why does God put these hurtful things upon us? Read this book and your heart and mind will be assured about the reality of God’s goodness.

4. Afraid Of All The Things – Scarlet Hiltibidal

  • Anxiety. Did you know that 1 in 13 people globally have anxiety? About 40 million adults in the US are affected. Like me, you may be one of those 40 million. In this book, Scarlet Hiltibidal shares what the gospel says about your fears – Jesus is there and He will rescue you. She shares her personal fears and experiences and what she has learned from them. Our present day world is filled with so much scary stuff, but we are not alone and we don’t have to be afraid of everything. Walking hand in hand with Jesus who will strengthen us, help us and hold us up with His righteous right hand, we can be comforted that He is always with us. (Isaiah 41:10)

5. Truth Unchanging – Becky Thompson

  • All mamas must read this book! This is the encouragement we need! Through all the commotion of motherhood we must learn to hear God. For less than 5 minutes a day, you can get your daily fill of hope and inspiration. This devotional book is meant to help you spark a personal connection with God with the help of author Becky Thompson. You won’t be disappointed.
